A holdall or a gym bag?

Capacity is the whole difference. A gym bag takes one session's kit; a holdall takes a weekend, a tournament, or a full set of training gear plus boots and a towel. If someone travels with a team or stays overnight for away fixtures, the holdall is the one that gets used — for a twice-weekly gym visit it is more bag than anyone wants to carry.

Will it work as cabin luggage?

These are soft-sided and squash into an overhead locker, but sizes vary by airline and none of these are sold as cabin-compliant. Check the listed dimensions against the airline before assuming, since cabin allowances differ widely.
