What is the difference between plated and solid?

Solid pieces are the same metal throughout, so nothing can wear away. Plated pieces carry a precious-metal layer over a base, and the listing says which base — gold plated on silver is bonded to sterling, not to a grey alloy, which is what stops a worn edge looking obvious.
