Steel or silver plated?
Steel is the everyday finish — it will not tarnish, and it suits someone who wears a tie daily and will not think about maintenance. Silver plated is warmer and dressier, which is what you want for an occasion piece, but it will mark over years the way any plated metal does. The boxed cufflink sets are the better gift when the occasion is the point rather than the wear.
Is a slide the same as a tie clip?
Not quite, and it matters for the gift. A slide has no hinge — it grips by tension and holds the tie against the shirt placket without pinching it. Clips bite and can mark fine silk; slides are the gentler choice and the more traditional one.
