Inside the door or outside it?

These are internal mats. Placed inside a front or back door they do the job they are made for — catching what comes off shoes — and the crest stays sharp for years. Put outside in the weather, the pile flattens and the print fades within a season, which is the mistake worth avoiding on a gift like this.

How are they cleaned?

Shake and vacuum rather than wash. Loop pile releases dry dirt easily; embossed rubber-backed mats can be wiped. Neither should go in a washing machine, which separates the backing from the pile.
