Gold finish or gold plated on silver?

They are not the same thing and the listing distinguishes them. Gold-finish pieces carry a gold-coloured coating over a base metal and are the everyday choice. Gold plated on silver is bonded to a sterling base, costs more, and is what you want when the gift is marking something — a milestone birthday, an anniversary, a retirement.

What happens if plating wears?

On plated-on-silver pieces, what shows through is silver rather than a dull grey alloy, which is why they age better at high-contact points like ring shanks and clasp edges. Keeping them dry and away from perfume slows it considerably.
