Stationery is a third of the Hello Kitty range and the reason most people arrive: six-piece sets, a barrel pencil case, pen sets, a fidget pen and puffy and tech sticker sets. Around it sit PVC keyrings including a coin-purse version, a silver-plated necklace and bead bracelet, a fuzzy mug and flip-top bottle, posters, a desk lamp, watches and birthday cards.

Buying for a child or for an adult collector?

Sanrio spans both and the pieces do not overlap much. For a child, the sticker sets, stationery packs and junior watches are the natural buy. For an adult, the jewellery, the desk lamp and the mug are the pieces that fit a grown-up desk without looking like a toy. The keyrings are the one thing that suits either.

How do you know a Sanrio product is genuine?

By the face. Licensed Sanrio goods reproduce Hello Kitty's proportions exactly — whisker spacing, the bow's position, the absence of a mouth. Unofficial versions almost always shift something there, and once seen it does not unsee.
